Adults A-D

(1+ Yrs.)

When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters. When dogs are marked urgent, we could lose them at any time with little to no notice.

Previous Owner Comments Apr 29, 2925: Owner found her in October at Darlington Dollar General. She is good with other dogs (including small/tiny dogs) and cats. Home didn't have kids but don't foresee any reason to worry because she never meets a stranger and is super sweet. She is housebroken and may need a few reminders as owner worked and couldn't always come home in time to let her out on schedule while she was nursing pups. She slept in bed with owner or beside on her own doggie bed. Walks on leash and rides in car.

Blueberry - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - $100 towards adoption or rescue pull fees & sponsored for rescue HW treatment

10/25/24 Intake: lab mix, 64 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW+, abandoned. Blueberry came in with 2 adults, 3 puppies, plus a mom and newborn pups from Hartsville. The dogs were abandoned when the owner was evicted earlier this week. Blueberry walks on a leash and was patient and friendly for intake. He is heartworm positive.

More about Blueberry Apr 11, 2025: Blueberry, 2 year old 63lb heart worm positive lab mix has been waiting so long for a home. He has not had an easy life, being abandoned by his owner along with friend Raspberry. Luckily Raspberry has been chosen by a rescue, but Blueberry is wondering when it will be his turn to be loved by a family. Blueberry is a handsome boy that gets along with other dogs. When he met friend Munchkin he mingled nicely but didn’t seem to know how to play with her. One can only speculate he lived his life tied up in his yard and wasn’t allowed to play with his friend Raspberry. He was happy to share some sniffs with Jed when they were out walking together with our volunteers. Blueberry has a nice smile and is happy when he gets attention from staff and volunteers. Can you help this boy learn that life can be great? He certainly deserves the chance, please share so he can find a loving home. Blueberry is located in Hartsville SC.

Butterball - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - $50 towards adoption or rescue pull fees

10/29/24 Intake: lab mix, 61 lbs, 1-2 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Butterball, Gabby, and Cindylou came in together from High Hill Road. Some were chained and others were put in multi tier cat crates (that were clearly too small for the size of the dogs). Butterball came in with about a 1/2 inchchain link with a Brinks Padlock locking the chain tightly around his neck. Butterball did well for intake; he just laid down his entire intake. Butterball - heartworm negative.

More about Butterball Apr 11, 2025: BUTTERBALL, 2 year old 61 lb heart worm negative lab mix needs rescue or adoption please! Butterball arrived in October, and he’s been at our Bridge Facility for much too long. This friendly boy would love a home and family. Poor Butterball arrived with wounds on his neck from a much too tight chain and padlock collar, so his life before coming into our care wasn’t the best. He’s all healed up, neutered, and up to date on his vaccines and ready to go! Butterball is a typical labby boy, happy, loves to play with other dogs, and enjoys the company of the volunteers. His tail is always wagging and at times resembles a helicopter. Butterball has met lots of other dogs and is always welcoming to them. He walks very well on a leash and may have had some training. He’s smart, eager to learn, and would make a great companion for an active person. One volunteer said “Butterball is So much fun! He is a good times kind of boy. He’s happy, he’s active, his whole demeanor is very lively. Just seeing him makes me smile. He greets with a smile and just pulls you into a smile yourself.” He’s eager to find his people, can you help? Located in Hartsville, SC ask to meet him today!

Foster Update Mar 23, 2023: She is crate trained and housebroken. She loves to play outside. She enjoys her toys. She doesn't bark very often at all except when she gets excited while playing or when her foster arrives home from work. She is good on leash. She rides good in the car. No cats please; she's too curious about them. While her current foster home has no other pets, Carmella does like other dogs. Laid-back dogs with spurts of playful energy that like to bask in the sun are Carmella's speed. Carmella loves attention and absolutely adores her humans. She will often choose to sit by her human to get belly rubs rather than running and playing with other dogs.

Cupcake - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER

2/12/25 Intake: terrier mix, 45 lbs (very thin), 2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Cupcake was brought in as a stray by the Hartsville Police Dept. He came in with a padlock on his collar that had to be cut off. He is severely underweight. Cupcake is heartworm positive.

Volunteer Input May 27, 2025: In February, Cupcake was left in a backyard, not just chained, but with a padlock to his collar, no food, no water, no shelter for weeks before we found out about him. The officer had to cut his chain to free him and he arrived to the shelter still wearing his padlock. I am a volunteer, and my husband and I have visited Cupcake every week as he has gained weight and got stronger. He loves getting lots of treats and can even catch them and knows how to sit nicely for them too. I also walk him about twice a week and he’s always been great on leash. I take him home with me once a week for a few hours to just snuggle him and let him rest. He has excellent house manners and gives us sweet kisses of appreciation. He's a big baby and a total sweetheart! I also took him to Wild Heart for dining on the deck late one Sunday. He wanted to meet everyone. His name just suits him perfectly! My husband and I have loved Cupcake since he was found, and we beg you to please look in his beautiful blue eyes and tell him you can love him forever.

Deputy Dawg - May 2023 Intake

5/11/23 Intake: lab mix, no weight, 8 mos old, male, HW-, stray. Deputy Dawg got his name from the star-shaped white patch on his neck. He needs to get used to the leash.

Foster Update Apr 17, 2024: Deputy Dawg arrived in May 2023 shy and skittish, and some new experiences at the shelter caused him anxiety. He is still a bit skittish around me. He is making improvements each week in my home, which is a good thing, and I'm very proud of him. He is food motivated and loves a treat. When he is outside, he may not necessarily come over when called, but he circles me and watches me. He doesn't get too far and enjoys hanging out among the other dogs. He gets along great with them. He observes everything they do and has learned so much from them. He is afraid of cats, so he doesn't bother them. When he is inside, he lays in my living room with the other dogs. I can get up and down, and he does not move anymore. This is really an accomplishment and great to see. When he is within arms reach of me while he snuggles with the dogs, I will also gently touch him, and he does not move. I love this. He is crate trained. I put him outside every few hours, and he has not had any accidents in the house. If I am not home, then he stays in his crate. Because of his skittishness/anxiety, he has a sensitive stomach, so I keep his meals consistent. He is a sweet boy, and he is what rescue is all about. He would need to be in a forever home with other dogs to continue to build his confidence and with a patient person that will love him at his pace.

Foster Update Feb 5, 2025: Dina, 2-3 year old 40lb heart worm positive lab/terrier mix is looking for her forever home. She arrived at the animal shelter as a stray May 2024, a mere 21 pounds. Foster Mom said “I took her home to foster, where Dina blossomed with love and care. She gained much-needed weight and became an integral part of our foster home. Dina played with the other male and female dogs in my home, and served as a mentor to foster puppies. She was a joy to foster. Dina is ready for a home of her own! She loves her humans! She is very well-behaved inside the home, in her crate, and is not a vocal girl at all (does not bark a lot, if ever). Dina has a nice medium energy level, well-suited for any family. She is very content with a little play time or a walk, and then snuggle time with her humans. No cats for Dina.”
