When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

7/10/25 Intake: terrier/shepherd mix, 43 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Lance was brought in as a stray by a community member from Peach St in Darlington. He is heartworm negative.
More about Lance July 30, 2025: Lance is a handsome 1 year old Terrier/Shepherd mix pup. He was found as a stray in his foster mom's neighborhood. He was overwhelmed and scared but let her handle him to get him safely secured at her home as she worked to reunite him with his family. Unfortunately, no one claimed him, so he is now available through the Darlington County Humane Society. In the time that he has been in foster, he has improved so much with his fearfulness and has become quick friends with another resident female dog. She has helped him gain his confidence and we have been able to witness just how happy and playful this boy is. He is working on his leash skills and improves each day. He has moments where he will flatten out when facing new experiences but summons his courage when foster mom reassures him. He is continuing to work on new experiences and learning to trust me more.

Leon - June 2024 Intake
6/13/24 Intake: lab mix, 32 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Leon, 1-year-old lab mix, was brought in by animal control after being found on Stanley Circle in Darlington. He has been gradually warming up to the staff. Additionally, Leon tested negative for heartworms.
Foster Update June 17, 2024: Leon arrived to the shelter very timid. Leon is trying to become a little braver. He's getting better on the leash. He has been in a foster home where he loves his other 4 legged friends. He has not bothered the cats in the foster home who hang out on the porch with him. He is a very cute boy, short legs and a beautiful siver coat. He is playful and bouncy and wants to become part of a family. He needs someone patient to help him gain confidence.

She arrived with sibling Rocket via Animal Control and has spent 157 days waiting to be chosen. Lylla gets along great with other dogs and is a nice smaller size. She’s already spayed, up to date on vaccines, and ready to leave shelter life behind. Lylla is such a pretty little lady, a beautiful copper color, and has met several dogs in play groups. She loves to run and play, enjoys volunteer attention, and is an excellent reader of other dogs. 6/3/24 Intake: terrier mix, 33 lbs, 1-2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Marlin came in as a stray by animal control from High Hill Road in Darlington. He did well for intake and walked well on a leash. He is a sweet boy and heartworm positive.
Foster Update Oct 24, 2024: Meet Marlin, a 1 1/2 to 2 year old 34lb heart worm positive terrier mix is currently in foster and available for rescue or adoption. He’s met several dogs in play groups and has several doggy foster siblings. He’s dog friendly and has the best smile🙂. He arrived as a stray in early June and luckily caught the eye of one of our wonderful fosters. A one night sleep over before the Panting for Paws 5k event has turned into a longer stay for Marlin. His foster Mom said “Marlin made fast friends with all my male and female dogs. He shared toys and treats nicely, had no accidents in the house, and did fantastic when crated. He went to the Panting for Paws 5k, Purrs McBarkin', and the rail trail. He met all kinds new friends, even some toddlers that he was very gentle with. He was just loving all the attention! Marlin is a very affectionate boy and would try to climb into the laps of anyone who would sit with him. He's a super gentle treat-taker, although he is choosey about what treats he will eat. He's just a connoisseur of finer foods. He also loves riding in the car. He hasn't figured out how to load up on his own, but he isn't much of a jumper. Once he's in there, he just lays down and enjoys the ride. He unloads just fine on his own, ready to get out and start a new adventure. He has gotten so much better walking on a leash, but occasionally needs some encouragement in new places. A little love and a person to snuggle him is all he wants”. Foster Update Nov 5, 2025: Sweet Nandita was such a good mom, and now it's her turn to find forever love. Currently in a foster home, this wonderful little lady is a great match for any family. "Nandita is so loving and gentle. She appreciates attention and couldn't be more grateful for your kindness. She likes other dogs, is fine with cats and kids, and is happy to play or just hang out together and chill. She enjoys toys, treats, and a chew bone. She's housebroken with good manners. She's crate trained and also loves to share your bed if allowed. She is 2 years young, around 40lbs, fully vetted, microchipped, and sponsored for heartworm treatment for adoption. Nandita is sure to make a family very happy. Let's get her home for the holidays!"
Foster Update Nov 20, 2025: This is Nandita (aka Nan, aka Nan bread, aka Nannieee). She has been with us for a little bit now, working on life as a loved doggo and learning trust. She was brought to the shelter with her puppies, and they have since found a home. She was not thriving in the shelter and seemed like a good fit for us to foster. When I tell you Nan is sweet.... That's an understatement. This girl wants to be cuddled and love on humans more than anything. She is still timid towards new situations, but she adjusts so well. She is lovely with her leash skills. She is now crate trained. She knows food and treat time happens there, so it has been a safe place. She is potty trained. She loves playing with other dogs. Sometimes she needs to warm up, but again, adjusts quickly. She even made a friend at a babysitter stay with a fellow foster whilst we were on vacay. She also is good with cats. She's very good at self play. The girl loves a toy. Nandita would make a great companion for anyone looking for a huge snuggle butt. Bonus points: she grunts like a piggy when getting love and bunny hops when she runs.

Parker (P x 8 Pups) - Apr 2024 Intake
4/16/24 Intake: lab mix, 5 - 6.5 lbs, 8 wks old, strays. Px8 were brought in as strays. They were found off of D Avenue in Darlington. They all did great for intake and are so adorable. Pablo (male), Padma (female), Palmer (male), Parker (male), Paxton (male), Perry (male), Pippa (female), Porter (male).
Parker's Special Needs Update June 16, 2025: Parker was diagnosed as needing femoral head ostectomy (FHO) on both hips. He had successful surgery on his right hip in January 2025 and has recovered in a foster home, where he is still staying. Surgery for his left hip will be scheduled when funds are raised. A recovery period of about six weeks in foster care will then be needed before he's available for adoption or transfer to rescue.

More About Pork Chop Sept. 10, 2025 BIG DOG LOVERS…this handsome brindle boy is Pork Chop and he’s available for rescue or adoption. Pork Chop arrived in May as a stray, and is just the sweetest guy. He’s a big boy too, lol, all 89 lbs of terrier blend, 1 year 3 months old and heart worm negative. He is dog, kid and people friendly, with gorgeous eyes and markings. Pork Chop is the kind of dog folks would take notice of on a stroll around town. Pork Chop was wonderful during the Pups on the Patio event at Starbucks. He enjoyed meeting lots of folks, and did so well with the kids he met. He gently took treats offered, and happily accepted attention calmly, all the while wagging his tail. During play groups he has met several dogs and plays so nicely with all. He is a big boy with a huge heart, ready to be a friend to all, human and canine. Field Trip Nov 14, 2025: Pork Chop’s Day Out! Pork Chop was eager to go on his field trip. He got in the backseat all by himself, then looked like “okay-let’s go have fun!” He rode in the backseat like a champ, never trying to climb up front. He laid down but preferred to sit up and sniff/put his head out the window. He was just soaking that “free/letting go” feeling in. First stop was a 2 mile walk at Kalmia Gardens. He has good leash skills, he needs a reminder not to pull, but does a lot better on the leash once he gets some energy out. Then there was slack in the leash and no pulling after. Second stop was Wild Heart Brewing. He was SO well behaved. He patiently waited for water and his food. The waitress came by the table and he never attempted to jump on her or other customers walking by. A few people stopped to say hi, and he eagerly accepted pets, remaining calm and polite. He took treats gently. Everyone sees a big dog when they look at him, but he’s a big sweetheart with a goofy side. An active family/family with a backyard or another dog would be great for him! Pork Chop is a 1 1/2 year old 89lb heart worm negative lab/terrier mix. He is great with other dogs and kids. Big dog lovers, ask for this handsome boy now!

More about Pringle Nov 4, 2025: PRINGLE, 2 year old 57lb heart worm negative lab mix available for rescue. He gets along nicely with other dogs and love cuddles from volunteers. He is patient and has a nice energy level. He meets other dogs very politely and is ready to play if they are. He also takes corrections very well when playing. A smaller female that was having fun running and playing with him let him know that she wasn't happy that he accidentally ran into her. He stopped and waited patiently without saying anything back. Pringle was very good when a male dog tried mounting him, simply giving a gentle reminder to not do that. Very impressive! Pringle enjoys volunteer attention, seeking some pets in between play. Pringle also walks well on a leash and is a nice medium size dog with a great personality. Pringle is neutered, up to date with vaccines, healthy, happy, and ready to find his furever home. Pringle is a handsome, well mannered boy.

Ruby aka Judy - July 2022 Intake
7/28/22 Intake: terrier mix, 56 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Previously lived inside with a chihuahua. Reportedly good with kids and other dogs. No cats for her please.
*NEW* Foster Update Feb 3, 2025: Ruby is an owner surrender who has been with me for a while now. She never stayed at the shelter and came home with me to foster at intake. She was an inside girl with her former family. She doesn't do well with cats, so we have had to keep her outside with us. She is a strong girl who doesn't always realize just how strong she is. I have had her at a few adoption events and she always did well. I would be careful with her around small children as she gets excited and might knock them over. She walks well on the leash and loves to go on walks. She rides well in the car out of the crate. She gets along with others but is more of a people dog rather than needing a canine buddy. She loves her toys and loves nothing more than to play fetch. She will bring it back to me but seems to enjoy showing me just how strong she is by not letting me have the toy. We remedy that by having two toys. She is a good girl, and I would love to find a better situation for her than what I can give her.

9/19/25 Intake: beagle mix, 18.8 lbs, 8 yrs old, female, HW+, stray. Ruth was brought in as a stray by a community member from E Billy Farrow Hwy in Hartsville. She is heartworm positive.
