When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

7/10/25 Intake: terrier/shepherd mix, 43 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Lance was brought in as a stray by a community member from Peach St in Darlington. He is heartworm negative.
More about Lance July 30, 2025: Lance is a handsome 1 year old Terrier/Shepherd mix pup. He was found as a stray in his foster mom's neighborhood. He was overwhelmed and scared but let her handle him to get him safely secured at her home as she worked to reunite him with his family. Unfortunately, no one claimed him, so he is now available through the Darlington County Humane Society. In the time that he has been in foster, he has improved so much with his fearfulness and has become quick friends with another resident female dog. She has helped him gain his confidence and we have been able to witness just how happy and playful this boy is. He is working on his leash skills and improves each day. He has moments where he will flatten out when facing new experiences but summons his courage when foster mom reassures him. He is continuing to work on new experiences and learning to trust me more.

Leon - June 2024 Intake
6/13/24 Intake: lab mix, 32 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Leon, 1-year-old lab mix, was brought in by animal control after being found on Stanley Circle in Darlington. He has been gradually warming up to the staff. Additionally, Leon tested negative for heartworms.
*NEW* Foster Update June 17, 2024: Leon arrived to the shelter very timid. Leon is trying to become a little braver. He's getting better on the leash. He has been in a foster home where he loves his other 4 legged friends. He has not bothered the cats in the foster home who hang out on the porch with him. He is a very cute boy, short legs and a beautiful siver coat. He is playful and bouncy and wants to become part of a family. He needs someone patient to help him gain confidence.

She arrived with sibling Rocket via Animal Control and has spent 157 days waiting to be chosen. Lylla gets along great with other dogs and is a nice smaller size. She’s already spayed, up to date on vaccines, and ready to leave shelter life behind. Lylla is such a pretty little lady, a beautiful copper color, and has met several dogs in play groups. She loves to run and play, enjoys volunteer attention, and is an excellent reader of other dogs. 6/3/24 Intake: terrier mix, 33 lbs, 1-2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Marlin came in as a stray by animal control from High Hill Road in Darlington. He did well for intake and walked well on a leash. He is a sweet boy and heartworm positive.
Foster Update Oct 24, 2024: Meet Marlin, a 1 1/2 to 2 year old 34lb heart worm positive terrier mix is currently in foster and available for rescue or adoption. He’s met several dogs in play groups and has several doggy foster siblings. He’s dog friendly and has the best smile🙂. He arrived as a stray in early June and luckily caught the eye of one of our wonderful fosters. A one night sleep over before the Panting for Paws 5k event has turned into a longer stay for Marlin. His foster Mom said “Marlin made fast friends with all my male and female dogs. He shared toys and treats nicely, had no accidents in the house, and did fantastic when crated. He went to the Panting for Paws 5k, Purrs McBarkin', and the rail trail. He met all kinds new friends, even some toddlers that he was very gentle with. He was just loving all the attention! Marlin is a very affectionate boy and would try to climb into the laps of anyone who would sit with him. He's a super gentle treat-taker, although he is choosey about what treats he will eat. He's just a connoisseur of finer foods. He also loves riding in the car. He hasn't figured out how to load up on his own, but he isn't much of a jumper. Once he's in there, he just lays down and enjoys the ride. He unloads just fine on his own, ready to get out and start a new adventure. He has gotten so much better walking on a leash, but occasionally needs some encouragement in new places. A little love and a person to snuggle him is all he wants”. Foster Update Jan 18, 2025: Moore arrived to our home as a stray. We couldn't believe that such a great boy was on his own. Someone loved him before, because he is an awesome dog that was already familiar with being in a home. He adores his humans and plays well with our dogs. He walks good on leash. He keeps his crate tidy. He's fine around our dog savvy cats--if they run he will chase in fun--and he will share a nap outside in the sun with the cats. Moore is very sweet and loves the attention of his humans. He would be fine in a home with or without other dogs--as long as he has his humans he is content. He immediately rolls over for belly rubs. He has a lovely soft black and white coat that doesn't shed. He's fully vetted including his neuter, just 1 year young, heartworm negative and 58.8lbs. He's ready to go HOME!

Field Trip Aug 29, 2025: PABLO enjoyed a day out and about Hartsville during his #PawsAroundThePeeDee adventure with a volunteer. He visited Purrs McBarkin', taking treats gently and Crema, where he enjoyed his own pup cup. He’s a nice medium sized boy at 39lbs, a young 1 year 8 month old heart worm negative terrier mix with gorgeous ears and a lovely black and white coat. Pablo did so well, he’s a chill, sweet boy who loves to get pets from folks, and showed off his nice leash skills. Located in Hartsville SC ask for Pablo today.

4/16/24 Intake: lab mix, 5 - 6.5 lbs, 8 wks old, strays. Px8 were brought in as strays. They were found off of D Avenue in Darlington. They all did great for intake and are so adorable. Pablo (male), Padma (female), Palmer (male), Parker (male), Paxton (male), Perry (male), Pippa (female), Porter (male).
Parker's Special Needs Update June 16, 2025: Parker was diagnosed as needing femoral head ostectomy (FHO) on both hips. He had successful surgery on his right hip in January 2025 and has recovered in a foster home, where he is still staying. Surgery for his left hip will be scheduled when funds are raised. A recovery period of about six weeks in foster care will then be needed before he's available for adoption or transfer to rescue.

More About Pork Chop- Sept. 10, 2025 BIG DOG LOVERS…this handsome brindle boy is Pork Chop and he’s available for rescue or adoption. Pork Chop arrived in May as a stray, and is just the sweetest guy. He’s a big boy too, lol, all 89 lbs of terrier blend, 1 year 3 months old and heart worm negative. He is dog, kid and people friendly, with gorgeous eyes and markings. Pork Chop is the kind of dog folks would take notice of on a stroll around town. Pork Chop was wonderful during the Pups on the Patio event at Starbucks. He enjoyed meeting lots of folks, and did so well with the kids he met. He gently took treats offered, and happily accepted attention calmly, all the while wagging his tail. During play groups he has met several dogs and plays so nicely with all. More about Rocket Jan 4, 2025: Handsome Rocket is a sweet 2 year old 43 lb heart worm positive terrier/boxer mix who arrived with sibling Lylla in August. Rocket is dog friendly and walks well on leash. Rocket currently resides at the outdoor Bridge Facility and would love to get into a warm, comfy home soon. Rocket is such a polite boy. He walked so nicely on the leash and was very friendly to all the dogs he met as well as others through the fence. He has a propeller tail that doesn’t stop wagging. Ruby aka Judy - July 2022 Intake
7/28/22 Intake: terrier mix, 56 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Previously lived inside with a chihuahua. Reportedly good with kids and other dogs. No cats for her please.
*NEW* Foster Update Feb 3, 2025: Ruby is an owner surrender who has been with me for a while now. She never stayed at the shelter and came home with me to foster at intake. She was an inside girl with her former family. She doesn't do well with cats, so we have had to keep her outside with us. She is a strong girl who doesn't always realize just how strong she is. I have had her at a few adoption events and she always did well. I would be careful with her around small children as she gets excited and might knock them over. She walks well on the leash and loves to go on walks. She rides well in the car out of the crate. She gets along with others but is more of a people dog rather than needing a canine buddy. She loves her toys and loves nothing more than to play fetch. She will bring it back to me but seems to enjoy showing me just how strong she is by not letting me have the toy. We remedy that by having two toys. She is a good girl, and I would love to find a better situation for her than what I can give her.
