When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters. When dogs are marked urgent, we could lose them at any time with little to no notice.

12/30/24 Intake: terrier mix, 42 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, stray. Laramie was brought in as a stray from Woodard Farm Road in Darlington. She looks to have had a litter of puppies. She did great for intake. Laramie is heartworm negative.

If you have been looking up different fur-babies to make wonderful additions to home, all you actually needed to do is LOOK DOWN! Laramie will be right at your feet to tell you she’s the one! She’s a short girl barely reaching knee height and already fully grown. She’s only about 40 pounds; she’ll fit right there in the front seat watching as she leaves the shelter behind. Laramie is a sweet and darling young girl. She’s about 3 and half years old and gets along with everyone she’s met. Other dogs, she loves them. People, give her more! Laramie enjoys to romp around when getting out of her kennel. Although only for a bit because she then enjoys the calming atmosphere of sun on her face. Laramie has blossomed from shy girl to social sweetie. She has grown very well with leash walking since first arriving in December. Once past the shelter halls, the leash is no biggie and it’s game on for affection! So if you’re looking to add a little bit of love to your every day life, we have a Little Bit here with a whole lot of love to go around. Ask us about Laramie.

8/26/24 Intake: terrier mix, 43 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW+, stray. Leila and her pups (Lx4) came in together as strays.
More about Leila Nov 21, 2024: LEILA, 2 year old, 42lb heart worm positive terrier mix is ready for rescue or adoption. Arriving in August with 4 pups, she did a great job raising her family, who have gone on to homes of their own. Leila is a spunky gal. She adores playing with other dogs and would welcome having a like minded doggy friend to spend her days with. She is a beautiful black and white, affectionate, smiley faced sweetie who deserves a family of her own. Looking at Leila’s videos you can see she’s a younger Mom who has plenty of spunk and happily engaged with both Chandler and Isabella. Chandler’s play style was a match for her, lots of good natured romping. Isabella preferred to roll on the ground and let Leila try to coax her to get up and play. Leila, after trying to convince her to get up, decided she’d just get down on Isabella’s level to continue the fun. Who can help this pretty girl?
Paws Around the Pee Dee Feb 15, 2025: Leila went out field tripping during the Paws Around the Pee Dee event and had a wonderful day. She walked around town meeting other dogs and kids, enjoying treats, and playing in the grass. Her handlers described her as “loving, sweet, and playful." She knows how to sit, did great riding in the car, and enjoys snuggling. Leila needs a bit of improvement with her leash skills, but with regular training she would make a wonderful companion. Leila is a spunky gal. She adores playing with other dogs and would welcome having a like minded doggy friend to spend her days with. She is a beautiful black and white, affectionate smiley faced sweetie who deserves a family of her own.

Leon
6/13/24 Intake: lab mix, 32 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Leon, 1-year-old lab mix, was brought in by animal control after being found on Stanley Circle in Darlington. He has been gradually warming up to the staff. Additionally, Leon tested negative for heartworms.
Foster Update Aug 4, 2024: Leon needs some TLC. I'm learning more about him every day. He did slip his collar and got away from me, but he has stayed in my yard. He loves to play with all my dogs. He became spooked by one of my dogs and ran away, yelping with his tail between his legs. Another 1 of my dogs inadvertently smacked him in the face with her tail. He yelped and jumped back. He is very tender hearted. He will need a slow hand and another calm confident dog to help him feel safe. My greatest fear is that he will be lost by a foster or an adopter who does not know how to manage a fearful dog. He is cute as a button, weighing in right at 30 pounds.

Lushy - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER
9/25/24 Intake: lab/terrier mix, 47 lbs, 1.5 yrs old, female, HW+, stray. Lushy was brought in by animal control as a stray off of Flatnose Road in Darlington. She did well for intake and is such a sweet girl. Lushy is heartworm positive.
More about Lushy Feb 8, 2025: Lushy, 1 year old 47 lb heart worm positive lab mix is available for rescue or adoption. She arrived as a stray in September and is sweet as can be, great with other dogs, and loves her people. Lushy is a beautiful brown and white girl who has met males and females in the play yard and did well. She roomed with several females at the old shelter due to her sweet demeanor and is now at our Bridge facility waiting for her chance at a home and family. Located in Darlington SC.
Paws Around the Pee Dee Feb 15, 2025: Lushy went out during the Paws Around the Pee Dee Pal-entine adventure and did so well. Her volunteer handler said she’s very affectionate, walked great on the leash, was well behaved, and did not jump on anyone. She listened to commands, met several kids, loves giving kisses and snuggling, and is calm and laid back. Lushy is just a luscious girl that would love her own family.

Malcolm - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - sponsored for adoption or $150 towards rescue pull fees
9/3/24 Intake: lab mix, 43 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, stray. Malcom was brought in as a stray surrender. He was found on this young man’s property and wouldn’t leave, so he brought him in. Malcolm is a sweet boy. He does know how to sit and listens very well. Malcolm did well for intake and is heartworm positive.
More about Malcolm Mar 12, 2025: Malcolm is available for rescue or adoption. He’s a 1 1/2 year old 59lb heart worm positive hound/lab mix that gets along with other dogs and loves his person. Malcolm went out during the Paws Around the Pee Dee adventure and enjoyed walking around town meeting other people. He liked riding in the car, snuggling, and kissing. Malcolm knows the sit command but needs some leash training, as he is strong and does pull. Malcolm was in a temporary foster home during the January snow and his foster Mom said he’s a big love bug. He got along great with his foster siblings; all females. Malcolm would play and run but was not super energetic, after a burst of energy he is happy to hang out on the couch with his person. He didn't like being left in the yard too much; Malcolm preferred to be inside with his foster Mom. He loves being near his people and would prefer someone that is home part of the day. If you want a loyal companion this is the boy for you! Malcolm has done well in play groups, meeting both male and female dogs. He is hoping his luck will change soon and find his happy forever.

6/3/24 Intake: terrier mix, 33 lbs, 1-2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Marlin came in as a stray by animal control from High Hill Road in Darlington. He did well for intake and walked well on a leash. He is a sweet boy and heartworm positive.
Foster Update Oct 24, 2024: Meet Marlin, a 1 1/2 to 2 year old 34lb heart worm positive terrier mix is currently in foster and available for rescue or adoption. He’s met several dogs in play groups and has several doggy foster siblings. He’s dog friendly and has the best smile🙂. He arrived as a stray in early June and luckily caught the eye of one of our wonderful fosters. A one night sleep over before the Panting for Paws 5k event has turned into a longer stay for Marlin. His foster Mom said “Marlin made fast friends with all my male and female dogs. He shared toys and treats nicely, had no accidents in the house, and did fantastic when crated. He went to the Panting for Paws 5k, Purrs McBarkin', and the rail trail. He met all kinds new friends, even some toddlers that he was very gentle with. He was just loving all the attention! Marlin is a very affectionate boy and would try to climb into the laps of anyone who would sit with him. He's a super gentle treat-taker, although he is choosey about what treats he will eat. He's just a connoisseur of finer foods. He also loves riding in the car. He hasn't figured out how to load up on his own, but he isn't much of a jumper. Once he's in there, he just lays down and enjoys the ride. He unloads just fine on his own, ready to get out and start a new adventure. He has gotten so much better walking on a leash, but occasionally needs some encouragement in new places. A little love and a person to snuggle him is all he wants”. You can see Marlin blossom in his videos, from an unsure boy to a super happy dog making fast friends.

12/11/24 Intake: terrier mix, 56 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Moore was found as a stray on Trailwood Dr in Hartsville.
Foster Update Jan 18, 2025: Moore arrived to our home as a stray. We couldn't believe that such a great boy was on his own. Someone loved him before, because he is an awesome dog that was already familiar with being in a home. He adores his humans and plays well with our dogs. He walks good on leash. He keeps his crate tidy. He's fine around our dog savvy cats--if they run he will chase in fun--and he will share a nap outside in the sun with the cats. Moore is very sweet and loves the attention of his humans. He would be fine in a home with or without other dogs--as long as he has his humans he is content. He immediately rolls over for belly rubs. He has a lovely soft black and white coat that doesn't shed. He's fully vetted including his neuter, just 1 year young, heartworm negative and 58.8lbs. He's ready to go HOME!

Norman - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER
9/17/24 Intake: lab mix, 55 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Norman was brought in by animal control as a stray off of Mandy Lane in Darlington. Norman is heartworm negative. He did well for intake. Such a good boy. He just wanted to run around and play.
More about Norman Feb 8, 2025: NORMAN, 2 1/2 year old 52lb heart worm negative handsome, friendly lab mix needs a home! This boy is playful, loves people, gets along with other dogs, and sports a stunning ebony coat. Arriving as a stray in September, he is looking for a his own forever home. Norman is a happy boy who loves playing with squeaky toys, balls, people, and other dogs. He is polite when meeting others dogs and enjoys a romp, but he gravitates toward his people, happy to accept love and pets. He enjoys giving kisses and would make a great companion for an active person. After Norman was able to play and burn off some energy, he walked nicely on the leash returning to his kennel. Someone needs this happy, friendly boy. Norman is located in Darlington SC.
Paws Around the Pee Dee Feb 15, 2025: "We took Norman on a date for Valentine's weekend with Paws Around the Pee Dee where he walked around downtown Hartsville and visited lots of friends and got lots of attention. He is a loving, friendly, kind, enthusiastic boy that is a total sweetheart. He rode well in the car, walked on leash, knows how to sit, and likes snuggles and gives great kisses. He loves treats. We honestly didn't find anything that he doesn't like. He's heartworm negative, around 2.5 years old, 52lbs, fully vetted, microchipped and ready to go home. We hear he has been at the shelter since September and is urgently hoping that someone will notice how great he is. We sure did notice!"

Paws Around the Pee Dee Feb 15, 2025: Piney had a blast during his Paws Around the Pee Dee, smiling and making friends with everyone. He is a loving boy, ready to give a kiss and snuggle, then ready to walk around town to meet more friends. Piney is pretty good on a leash, and he’s an active dog that would love going on a hike. Piney gets along great with other dogs and would love a home with another active dog. Piney is a 1 year old, 42lb heart worm negative shepherd/dobie? mix, neutered, up to date on vaccines, and ready to pack his bags and leave the shelter life behind. Can you help Piney?

Pringle - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER
10/4/24 Intake: lab mix, 56 lbs, 1-2 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Pringle was brought in as a stray by animal control from Powerline Drive in Darlington. He did well for intake. Pringle is Heartworm negative.
More about Pringle Mar 13, 2025: Pringle is a 2 year old 42 lb heart worm negative lab mix, dog friendly, and in need of rescue or adoption! Arriving in October he has been waiting for 160 days for a new home. Pringle sure hopes he’ll be lucky to be chosen soon. Pringle is a handsome, well mannered boy. He is patient and has a nice energy level. He meets other dogs very politely and is ready to play if they are. He also takes corrections very well when playing. A smaller female that was having fun running and playing with him let him know that she wasn't happy that he accidentally ran into her. He stopped and waited patiently without saying anything back. Pringle was very good when a male dog tried mounting him, simply giving a gentle reminder to not do that. Pringle enjoys volunteer attention, seeking some pets in between play. Pringle also walks well on a leash and is a nice medium size dog with a great personality. He’s waited too long for a home.

Quinn - Aug 2022 Intake
8/22/22 Intake: 2 yrs old, 40 lbs, lab mix, female, stray. Quinn was brought in with Mozzerella. Both arrived very skinny and were not being taken care of. They seemed to have been dumped on the side of the road. She is very sweet and outgoing. She is HW:Positive. *Treated for HWs.
Foster Update Apr 2, 2024: Hi! My name is Quinn! I am looking for my furever family. I love to play outside. I can run really fast and I jump around like a kangaroo. I’m also a home body and love to lay around in my doggy bed. My favorite place to be scratched is my belly. I love to be petted and will melt into you as you rub my head. When you pet my head, I will stare into you eyes and you feel your heart melt with love ❤️. I am a very good girl. I can be left out of my crate all night and won’t tear up anything. I eat all of my meals in my crate. I have 3 foster brothers that I live with; 2 dog brothers that are the same size as me. We love to run and play in the back yard together. I have 1 kitty brother that I try to play with, but he doesn’t want to play. I’ve jumped on him a few times to try to get him to play, but he hissed at me and that let me know he didn’t want to play. I’ve met other cats and just sniffed at them in passing. My request for my future family would be to have a big yard that I can run and play in, a comfy doggy bed for me to lay in, lots of bones and toys for me to chew on, super belly rubs, and maybe a friend to play with. Please take me to my furever home!!

Reid - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - sponsored for adoption or $150 towards rescue pull fees & sponsored for rescue HW treatment
6/1/24 Intake: terrier mix, 47 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, stray. Reid was brought in as a stray surrender. They found the dog abandoned in Byrdtown. He did well for intake and walked well on a leash. Reid is heartworm positive.
More about Reid Oct 24, 2024: Reid, 1 year old, 47 lb, heart worm positive terrier mix was found abandoned by a Good Samaritan who kept him for a few weeks before bringing to the shelter. Reid was reported as being good with the kids before entering the shelter. Reid is a handsome guy who did very well with meeting other dogs, very polite with a quick sniff. Reid had the volunteers chuckling over his interest in the kiddie pool, wading and then dunking his head for a quick cool off. He enjoyed meeting the volunteers and ignored the cats when walking by them. He’s a cute boy who would make a great addition to any family. Our volunteer photographer noted “Sweet, little guy! I enjoyed spending time with him.” Reid is hoping you’ll want to spend time with him too; ask for him today.

Rocket - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - $100 towards adoption or rescue pull fees & sponsored for rescue HW treatment
8/3/24 Intake: terrier/boxer mix, 39 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW+, abandoned. Rocket and Lylla were brought in by animal control. They were abandoned at a property. Rocket is heartworm positive.
More about Rocket Jan 4, 2025: Handsome Rocket is a sweet 2 year old 43 lb heart worm positive terrier/boxer mix who arrived with sibling Lylla in August. Rocket is dog friendly and walks well on leash. Rocket currently resides at the outdoor Bridge Facility and would love to get into a warm, comfy home soon. Rocket is such a polite boy. He walked so nicely on the leash and was very friendly to all the dogs he met as well as others through the fence. He has a propeller tail that doesn’t stop wagging. He’s a nice medium size and was happy to meet both male and female dogs. Rocket loved meeting a Junior volunteer too. If you’re looking for a nice companion, ask for Rocket today.

Ruby aka Judy - July 2022 Intake
7/28/22 Intake: terrier mix, 56 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Previously lived inside with a chihuahua. Reportedly good with kids and other dogs. No cats for her please.
Foster Update Feb 3, 2025: Ruby is an owner surrender who has been with me for a while now. She never stayed at the shelter and came home with me to foster at intake. She was an inside girl with her former family. She doesn't do well with cats, so we have had to keep her outside with us. She is a strong girl who doesn't always realize just how strong she is. I have had her at a few adoption events and she always did well. I would be careful with her around small children as she gets excited and might knock them over. She walks well on the leash and loves to go on walks. She rides well in the car out of the crate. She gets along with others but is more of a people dog rather than needing a canine buddy. She loves her toys and loves nothing more than to play fetch. She will bring it back to me but seems to enjoy showing me just how strong she is by not letting me have the toy. We remedy that by having two toys. She is a good girl, and I would love to find a better situation for her than what I can give her.
