Adults E-K

(1+ Yrs.)

When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters. When dogs are marked urgent, we could lose them at any time with little to no notice.

Foster Update Dec 17, 2024: “Hi! I'm Giselle and I'm a 1.5 year old Lab mix who is UTD on my shots, spayed, heartworm negative, and full of life, love, and energy. There was only one thing on my list for 🎅🏻 Santa this year -- family to love me. I'm in a foster home now with cats and another dog, and I get along great with them. I am crate trained, house broken, and enjoying stealing a nap on the couch during the day. I'm great on a leash and love a squishy, squeaky toy (so, so much). I'm learning how to play fetch (I haven't mastered the drop part of it yet), but like Forrest Gump, I love to run!!! I run around the yard, to my water bowl, to the couch, to my crate. I also am very aware of what a "pretty girl" I am, so you'll need to be prepared to shower me with the affection and toys that all "pretty girls" deserve. If I sound like the perfect fit for your family, contact the Darlington County Humane Society today! I would love nothing more than to make your holiday dreams (and my wishes) come true!”

Field Trip Mar, 2025: Giselle went on a field trip with another volunteer and had the best time. Her fieldtripper said:

-Giselle is sweet with people once she warms up to you

-Takes treats nicely

-Loves pup cups

-Gives kisses

-Walks nicely on a leash

-Jumps right in the car

-A little restless in the car at first but eventually settles down

-Nervous when greeted by new people but she tries to be brave.

-She is good with dogs, cats, and kids.

-Heartworm negative

-She has been in a foster home since September and acclimated to being in a home.

-Would benefit from a confident fursibling to show her the ropes.

More about Giselle Apr 4, 2025: Giselle is still looking for her forever home. Hard to believe no one is interested in this heartworm negative, spayed beauty who is great with cats, dogs of all sizes, and kids? Giselle has been in a foster home since her arrival at the shelter in late August 2024. She's an absolute cuddle bug who loves nothing better than to snuggle against you with her head on your shoulder. She's crate-trained, house-broken, and walks well on a leash. Giselle does take time to warm up to people. She's been a little shy during play dates at the shelter, but her foster has rotated dogs into the home and on her turf, there isn't a shy bone in her body! She's the perfect dog for someone--maybe you!

9/5/24 Intake: terrier mix, 40 lbs, 3 yrs old, male, HW+ (HW treated 6/1/25), stray. Hamy and Turkey were brought in by Darlington Police Dept. They were not being cared for. They both did well for intake. Both boys are heartworm positive.

More about Hamy Jan 30, 2025: Hamy is available for rescue or adoption. Hamy is a 3 year old 44 lb heart worm positive lab mix who gets along with other dogs but no cats for Hamy please! He arrived in September with sibling Turkey, who is also looking for a home. Smiling Hamy met both males and females in play groups. He’s been kenneled with brother Turkey. He met Smith off leash then went back to checking out the yard. When he tried to meet Glinda, she indicated she wasn’t ready, and Hamy took the correction very well quickly backing off and giving her the space she needed. Hamy enjoyed volunteer attention when out in the play yards; he's happy to ask for some love. Hamy is such a handsome boy! Hamy is located in Hartsville SC.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Feb 15, 2025: Hamy was a bit nervous when he started out on his Paws Around the Pee Dee field trip, but when he met his brother Turkey at Wild Heart Brewing Company, he was so happy. He was able to enjoy himself having a pup cup and started to feel more at ease. He did walk about town afterward, was pretty good on the leash, visiting the shops, and getting treats. His field tripper handler said he was good in the car, is calm yet playful and of course, is very handsome.

Happy - (trial adoption)

1/17/25 Intake: terrier mix, 32 lbs (very thin), 2 yrs old, male, HW+ (light), stray. Happy was found as a stray on Kenwood Ave in Hartsville. Despite coming in malnourished, he did wonderful for intake!

Foster Update May 12, 2025: Are you ready for a tail that won’t stop wagging? Then you gotta meet Happy! Our 18 month old, 42 lb Pitbull is one happy dog, and he’s not afraid to show it. He greets me every morning with a whole body wag and a smile. He’s a stuffie-loving puppy who comes with some big boy skills, and he’s quickly mastering more. He leash walks slowly by my side without pulling (unless he sees a squirrel). He’s housebroken (rings a bell on the door when he needs to go out), responds to many commands, and is very eager to please. Happy arrived at my home as a nervous, anxious fella—not surprising as the chaos in the shelter was too much for his placid demeanor. He’s now a perfectly chill companion who dislikes leaving my side. He even goes to his kennel in the evening when he’s had enough of this busy household. I don’t close the door; he remains there all night. He loves to invite my dogs to play and does well around kiddos. Not sure about cats. Adopt Happy. Look into his beautiful hazel eyes and you'll see an old soul. He’s soft and sweet and he’ll love you harder than anyone ever has.

X-rays show no traumatic injury, and he’s not in pain, he just needs his own home. Described as a “big old Teddy Bear”, Headley enjoys volunteer belly rubs and attention, rolling over to encourage more scratches. He gets along with other dogs, and his tail does not stop wagging. Although Headley was a bit overzealous meeting shy Elphaba, he took corrections nicely. Headley meant no harm, he simply wants to be friends with everyone.
