When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters. When dogs are marked urgent, we could lose them at any time with little to no notice.

4/7/25 Intake: lab/terrier mix, 53 lbs, 1.5 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Scamp was brought in as a stray by the Darlington Police Dept. from Min Lou Cir in Darlington. He is heartworm negative.

Smoke - Feb 2023 Intake - sponsored for rescue pull fees
2/27/23 Intake: 1 yr old, 55 lbs, terrier mix, male, HW+, owner surrender. Smoke was an owner surrender. Smoke is a VERY happy boy. He does walk well on a leash.
Foster Update Apr 12, 2024: Don't let the adorable factor fool you – Smoke, a special 2-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, has a heart that shines brighter than the snow white "blaze" that adorns his face against his magnificent gray coat. While a neurological disorder gives him a unique, happy-go-lucky gait, Smoke's spirit is anything but unsteady. He delights in galloping across the yard, chasing toys, then enjoys a cuddle session on the couch. He doesn't mind sharing his space with other dogs and often looks to them to snuggle up, too, if they'll let him. Completely housebroken and crate-trained, Smoke adapts easily to his surroundings – a perfect quality for someone seeking a low-maintenance companion. Both of his fosters work full-time, and he has no issues waiting for them to get home without having any accidents. His wobbly walk might be his signature move, but Smoke's zest for life is what truly defines him. He's a dog who thrives on playtime, be it a rousing game of fetch or a refreshing dip in the kiddie pool! This charming dog with a heart of gold is ready to steal the heart of someone special – could it be you? Imagine the joy Smoke would bring to your life with his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty. We hope someone will choose him and love him the way the volunteers and his fosters have.

Splash - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER
3/8/25 Intake: terrier mix, 72 lbs, 5 yrs old, male, HW-, owner surrender. Splash was surrendered by his owners after they moved to a new home where no pets were allowed. He is heartworm negative.
Previous Owner Comment Mar 26, 2025: Splash is a good dog and surrendering him was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. We miss him so much & he is not “forgotten” or “abandoned” by us, I was just put in a situation that caused him to be separated from his family. Best believe if we could get him back we would. He is a great companion. He doesn’t like too much commotion. He’s goofy, yet strong. He is good with teens and adults. Splash is a big baby who loves to cuddle, but he doesn’t like thunderstorms. Splash IS loved & missed tremendously. I’m sure DCHS is probably tired of me calling to check on him each week.

Foster Update Sep 22, 2024: Trent the Titan - I am up for anything you want to do! I love going to the creek or maybe hunting Cryptids! I like my food in my own pen. I love other dogs, especially puppies. I really like being in the pen by the house, so I can see what you are doing. I would rather be with my person; I love attention more than anything.

Wells - Oct 2023 Intake
10/6/23 Intake: shepherd mix, 19 lbs, 4 mos old, male, stray.
Foster Update Oct 15, 2024: “Because I’m Happy”, that’s me, Wells! Foster Mom says he’s the happiest dog in Darlington County. Wells is a 15 month young, 45lb, heart worm negative lab/terrier mix, a dazzling, handsome brindle boy. Mr Fun is super happy, and his tail is always wagging. Wells is house trained, crate trained, walks great on a leash, enjoys squeaky toys and chew bones, is dog friendly and adores human attention and belly rubs. Wells is a Velcro dog, he will keep you company in the kitchen while you do dishes and then when it’s TV time he’s right next to you for a good snuggle. If he feels you’re not giving him enough “Well’s time” he will jump up and gently grab your arm to insist you stop and give him some love. Experienced pet parents will understand he is not biting, just communicating his need for you, and calms down quickly. Wells has lots of puppy energy, his perfect home would include another younger, playful dog to run, chase and burn off some energy. Because of his youthful, playful nature no cats for Wells, no small children and he may not be a good fit for an elderly person. If you have another dog looking for a playmate he’s your boy!
