Adults A-F

(1+ Yrs.)

When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

Angus aka Marion - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - *ROCKSTAR*

10/28/25 Intake: lab/terrier mix, 44.4 lbs, 2 - 2.5 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Angus was brought in as a stray by animal control from Dotts Circle in Darlington after being found emaciated and tied up. He is heartworm negative.

More about Angus April 1 2026: ANGUS is ready to move into a loving forever home. Arriving at the shelter underweight and in need of some TLC, this handsome boy is ready to take on the world!  He’s a 2 year old 47lb heart worm negative lab/terrier mix who loves other dogs and plays nicely with all. Volunteers say he’s cute and an adorable little guy.  His handlers during the Paws Around the Pee Dee adventure said he is “energetic, sweet, and outgoing.” His leash skills are “excellent,” rode well in the car, knows the sit command and is happy to give out kisses. Angus would be a great exercise/running/walking buddy, then spend time on a sofa together. He was neglected in his previous home, and deserves to be treated with love and kindness. Angus is located in Hartsville SC.

7/27/23 Intake: terrier/lab mix, 47.3 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW+, stray. Arya was brought in as a stray by a community member from Mechanicsville Hwy in Darlington. She is heartworm positive.

*NEW* Foster Update Nov 26, 2025: Arya is a lovable dog who is in search of her forever home. She is a 47 lb female American Staffordshire Terrier and Lab Mix with a stunning deep chocolate coat that appears almost black, earning her the affectionate nickname "Brown Sugar" from her foster dad. Arya was brought to the DCHS with an injured leg. Sadly, due to overcrowding, Arya found herself on a euthanasia list. However, fate intervened when her foster mom heard about her situation and immediately visited Arya at the shelter. In a heartwarming moment, Arya climbed into her lap and gave her one of her signature hugs. Touched by this sweet and affectionate gesture, her foster mom decided to take a leap of faith and brought Arya home instead. Arya quickly adapted to her foster family, consisting of eight other dogs, including one with a neurological disorder. Her gentle and friendly nature allowed her to seamlessly integrate into the pack, getting along well with every member. Arya's foster family describes her as loving, resilient, and a true joy to be around. Arya's personality is as delightful as her appearance. She is a playful and energetic dog who loves nothing more than engaging in fun activities. Whether it's a game of fetch, going for a long walk, or exploring the outdoors, Arya is always up for an adventure. Her injured leg has healed completely, leaving only a few very small scars, as she continues to show her zest for life. She showers her foster family with love, giving them her signature hugs that melt hearts. She thrives on human companionship and cherishes any opportunity to be near her loved ones. Whether it's snuggling on the couch, receiving belly rubs, or simply being by your side, Arya is happiest when she can shower her humans with affection. Being an eager-to-please dog, Arya is quick to learn and follows commands with enthusiasm. She quickly adapted to crate training and learned basic commands. She is a smart girl who is eager to please and would thrive with an owner who is willing to provide consistent training and positive reinforcement. With her combination of intelligence and willingness to learn, Arya could excel in various activities such as obedience training or agility. Overall, Arya's personality shines through her playful nature, affectionate demeanor, and her eagerness to please. If you're looking for a loyal and affectionate companion, Arya might just be the perfect match for you. Give this amazing dog a chance, and she will reward you with endless love and companionship.

Blazer

8/14/25 Intake: lab mix, 50 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Blazer was brought in as a stray by animal control from Field Pond Road in Darlington. He is heartworm negative.

Foster Update Sep 23, 2025: Yes, we know—every dog is described as "sweet." But with Blazer, it’s not just true—it’s his entire personality. Blazer came to us as a stray, carrying more than just scars—he had serious wounds on his back that needed urgent care. Through it all, he never stopped wagging his tail. No complaints. No fear. Just grateful brown eyes and a heart that wanted nothing more than to be loved. Even when in pain, Blazer was saying “thank you.” Now fully recovered (with some cool scars that only add to his character), Blazer is ready for his forever family. He’s just over a year old, about 50 pounds, and thinks he’s the perfect size for your lap. (He is not, but don’t tell him.) He’s the definition of eager-to-please. He came to us with some manners already and is doing great on a leash—though squirrels still test his resolve. Blazer is house-trained, crate-trained (he tucks himself in at night!), neutered, heartworm negative, and 100% treat-motivated. His temperament? In a word: chill. This gentle boy lets a 10-pound poodle share his food bowl. He’s thrilled to see our 8-year-old granddaughter but may be a bit too boisterous for toddlers—he’s got a big heart and a bigger body.

What will you get if you adopt Blazer? A soft-eyed, big baby who looks at you like you’re the center of his universe—and who’ll spend his life trying to prove it. Adopt Blazer if you’re ready for a lifetime of love, loyalty, and (yes) over-the-top sweetness.

Blythe aka Block - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - sponsored for adoption or $150 towards rescue pull fees

7/29/25 Intake: terrier mix, 44 lbs, 4 yrs old, female, HW+, stray. Block was brought in as a stray by Hartsville Police Dept. from Poole St in Hartsville. She is heartworm positive.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Oct 18, 2025: MEET BLYTHE…a 4 year old, 57lb, heart worm positive terrier mix. This low rider is dog friendly, ADORES KIDS, and is eager for a family of her own. Blythe had a great time during her Paws Around the Pee Dee field trip with a family! Blythe’s handlers said “She is an absolutely incredible dog, like truly. She would truly do so good with kids. She wouldn't leave until all of the kids were in front of her. She is going to make someone incredibly happy.” Blythe needed to be carried near the end of her field trip, tired from all the excitement and kiddo interaction. She needs a little lift in and out of the car with those cute short legs, but once she's in, she rides like a dream! She just needs a quick run to burn off that initial excitement, then she's a good leash walker. Volunteers mention Blythe gives out great hugs, takes treats gently, and is such a sweet girl. If you’re looking for a cuddly couch potato ask for Blythe! She will make an awesome companion. Located in Hartsville SC ask for her today!

Bubba - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - sponsored for adoption or $150 towards rescue pull fees

5/29/25 Intake: lab/terrier mix, 48 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Bubba was brought in as a stray by a community member from Drakes Nest Lane in Darlington. He came in with Sissy. He is heartworm negative.

More about Bubba Mar 25, 2026: This guy finally got a home after many months of waiting, but it just wasn't the perfect match. Sadly, he's back at our shelter now. Please don't let him stay here. Come meet him today! Why is he back? His family loved him very much. He was a good boy. They delayed for a month on bringing him back to us. He played a little too rough with the 3 year old and the cat in the home. His doggie play style is what we call rough and tumbly. It's all in fun. "Bubba arrived to us when he was a smaller pup and spent many months with us. He was overlooked many, many times, even after his sister Sissy was adopted. Then Bubba finally got a chance to see what a real home was like. He learned the love of a family. Now he has lost that." Bubba is nearing 2 years old and is 64lbs of joy that will surely fit right on the couch next to you for lots of belly rubs. He’s heartworm negative and interested in any activities you enjoy, possibly even slimming down a little in exchange for some fun. Bubba loves playing with toys; his favorite is tug-a-war. He walks well on leash and rides good in the car; he’s happy to be copilot or passenger. He loves water too so maybe he could be your first mate! Bubba gets along with other dogs and does enjoy a more rough and tumbly play style although he as hard as he plays! Bubba is a sensitive guy, as you’ll see when you give him lots of love and attention and he lets out a cry when you stop ...but who doesn’t love a man in touch with his emotions. Or maybe he only cries at the shelter because we can't give him as much love and attention as a family can. Bubba can easily manage a home with dogs, kids, and cats to play with or be perfectly content as your main man. He doesn’t totally realize his size, so kids of sturdy age are best and cats that know dogs can be obnoxious yet loving is perfect. A doggie pal that likes to roll and tumble together then snuggle for naps would be awesome. Bubba is URGENT to get back into a home. He is available for foster, foster-to-adopt, adoption, or Rescue.

More about Buffy Apr 6, 2026: BUFFY…”friendly, sweet, and energetic” said her handlers from her Paws Around the Pee Dee adventure. Buffy loved meeting people and kids at Kalmia Gardens, in downtown Hartsville, and at Wild Heart Brewing. She wants to make friends with everyone. She's a great snuggler and kisser, rides nice in a car, and does okay on a leash. She’ll make a great adventure companion. Buffy is a 1 year old, 45lb heart worm negative blue grey terrier mix who arrived in November and needs a home ASAP. Buffy LOVES playing and running with other dogs, then get cuddles and hugs from her person. Got a pool, creek, or pond? Buffy loves the water and she might make a great boating companion. Carl

11/3/25 Intake: terrier/lab mix, 42 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, stray. Carl was brought in as a stray by animal control from Moses Dr in Darlington. He came in with Lori. He is heartworm positive.

Foster Update Jan 28, 2026: Let me introduce you to Carl the Cuddle Bug, my winter weather foster friend. Carl arrived to the shelter 81 days ago. A very kind lady in the community helped 10 pups, with Carl and his sister, Lori, the only 2 that never found homes. She even got them spayed, neutered, and microchipped. Carl is a gentle, easygoing boy with a heart full of love and a serious talent for relaxing. One of his standout qualities? He’s cat-friendly! When the front door was opened and a cat was standing right there, Carl calmly ignored the cat and stayed focused on his day—no fuss at all. Carl is crate trained and does well with structure and guidance. He’s still learning the ropes on a leash and will need some extra practice, but he shows great potential—especially when walking alongside another dog. Having a canine buddy helps boost his confidence and makes walks more enjoyable for him. He responds well to correction, particularly from Genie, showing that he’s receptive and eager to please. At home, Carl is happiest doing what he does best: lounging in the living room, soaking up the calm vibes, and waiting for his next cuddle session. If you’re looking for a sweet, laid-back companion who loves comfort, companionship, and cozy downtime, Carl the Cuddle Bug might just be your perfect match.

Carmella - Feb 2022 Intake - sponsored for rescue pull fees

2/24/22 Intake: 49 lbs, 4 yrs old, lab mix, female, HW-, stray. This sweet lady was brought in as a stray. She is sweet and friendly. She got along with Apollo in the office fine. She did excellent during intake and walked fairly well on the leash. She is HW:Negative!!!

Foster Update Mar 23, 2023: She is crate trained and housebroken. She loves to play outside. She enjoys her toys. She doesn't bark very often at all except when she gets excited while playing or when her foster arrives home from work. She is good on leash. She rides good in the car. No cats please; she's too curious about them. While her current foster home has no other pets, Carmella does like other dogs. Laid-back dogs with spurts of playful energy that like to bask in the sun are Carmella's speed. Carmella loves attention and absolutely adores her humans. She will often choose to sit by her human to get belly rubs rather than running and playing with other dogs.

Chase - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER

1/6/26 Intake: terrier mix, 54 lbs, 5 yrs old, male, HW+, owner surrender. Chase was surrendered by his owners. He is heartworm positive.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Feb 14, 2026: We were happy to take Chase on a fun fieldtrip because he was feeling stressed in his kennel after 12 weeks. He's been at the shelter since owner surrendered in January at 5 years old! He did a pretty good job walking around town and wasn't pulling too much on the leash. He’s overzealous sometimes in meeting new dogs, has a healthy curiosity, and the shelter said he has a more active play style. He really enjoyed going to the park to play. He also watched the Little League playing baseball and was fine with the kids petting him through the fence. We also went to Purrs McBarkin' and he was able to choose his own treat. He really liked the soft chews the best. By the end of our time together, he was tired of walking and returned to the shelter ready for a nap.

More about Chase Mar 17, 2026: CHASE, 5 year old 57lb heart worm positive lab mix is another Darling who needs to get out of the shelter. He was an owner surrender in early January and is starting to show signs of kennel stress. The noisy shelter setting is hard on some dogs, and especially on dogs like Chase who knows what it’s like to have a family. Chase tested well with other dogs, walks well on a leash, and enjoys the kiddie pool! He is always happy to get out into the play yard and be free of the kennel. See his smiling face? He appreciates that the volunteers took him out to play and have some fun. Can you help change Chase’s luck? Foster, adopt, or rescue please! Ask for him today.

Pet of the Week Nov 27, 2025: CHESS is a radio star, the life of the party and a mellow, happy boy who needs a home. He’s 5 years young, a small 38lb heart worm positive terrier mix. Chess visited Rock 94.7 WWBD as Pet of the Week and loved his day out. Accompanied by a staff member and a volunteer Chess was such a good boy. His volunteer friend said “Chess is wonderful, pocket-sized, friendly, middle-aged, and ready for you to come take him home. His salt and pepper coat and eager kisses give him just the right touch of rugged handsome heartthrob. He is good with other dogs, loves people, and loooooves toys! His toys might be the center of his universe while stuck in our shelter, but you can show him how awesome it feels to have toys AND a home. He gets excited about going for a car ride and is backseat driving wherever you want to go. He is perfecting his leash skills to tag along on any adventure. He has so much love and life to offer a great family that's willing to take a chance on a boy that's all fluff on the inside.”

More about Chess Jan 16, 2026: Chess also does well with kids! He thoroughly enjoyed playing at one of the Birthday parties, letting them dress him up with a party hat then running around with his toy. Chess…dog friendly, loves people and his toys, good on a leash, and a nice compact size. Chess’s scars show he’s had a hard past, but please look beyond that. Watch his videos. He deserves a family who will love him. Located in Hartsville, SC.

Elliot walks beautifully on a leash and truly walks “like a dream.” He also rides well in the car, making him a great adventure buddy. Elliot can be a little shy at first and may take a minute to warm up, but once he does, his sweet personality shines through. Volunteers describe him as an old soul who enjoys the simple things in life—nice walks, gentle company, snuggling, and sitting in the sunshine. One of his favorite stops was Kalmia Gardens, where he happily explored and relaxed outdoors.
