Adults A-F

(1+ Yrs.)

When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

Ace

4/16/26 Intake: terrier mix, 63 lbs, 3 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Ace was brought in as a stray. He is heartworm negative.

Anita - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER

1/12/26 Intake: shepherd/terrier mix, 22.8 lbs (very skinny), 3 yrs old, female, HW-, abandoned. Anita was brought in as a stray by animal control from Brentwood Dr in Harstville. She was abandoned when her owner went to jail. She came in with Darwin and Gumball. She is very skinny and heartworm negative.

Paws Around the Pee Dee June 20, 2026: Anita was out and about during Paws Around the Pee Dee with one of our longtime shelter supporters and showed everyone what a wonderful companion she can be. She rode beautifully in the car, walked okay on a leash, and wasn't bothered by busy downtown traffic or loud noises. She enjoyed exploring downtown Hartsville, visiting Center Park, and stopping by Purrs McBarkin'. Anita is still learning about new experiences. She wasn't a fan of the wooden boardwalk at Kalmia Gardens, stairs, or entering unfamiliar doorways, but with a little encouragement and practice, she worked through those challenges. Her field trip notes describe her as sweet, calm, and curious, with just a touch of uncertainty in new situations.

More about Anita June 16, 2026: Meet Anita, a sweet and gentle 3 year old, 30lb, heart worm negative shepherd/bully mix who is ready for a home! When Anita arrived with her friends Gumball and Darwin, she was severely underweight at just 22 pounds after being abandoned. Thanks to the care she has received, Anita has gained weight, is now healthy, spayed, and ready to start her next chapter. Anita is dog friendly, kid friendly, loves human attention, gentle and sweet. No cats for Anita! Anita has been great in play groups at the shelter, happy to meet other dogs, greeting them politely with a few sniffs and plenty of tail wags. She is playful and will happily romp with the other dogs. She loves affection and happily stretches out to soak up pets and attention from her volunteer companion. Anita is a laid back girl who would love a patient family willing to help build her confidence while showing her all the good things life has to offer. After everything she's been through, she deserves a soft bed, loving people, and a place to finally call home. She was in a temporary storm foster and did well! Crate trained, great with other dogs, good with older folks, kids, walks nicely on a leash, good traveller.

Arthur - *ROCKSTAR*

4/8/26 Intake: lab mix, 76.8 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Arthur was brought in as a stray by animal control from Main St in Darlington. He is heartworm positive.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event June 20, 2026: Arthur enjoyed his Paws Around the Pee Dee field trip visiting Bethea Retirement Community and Purrs McBarkin' where he showed off what a wonderful boy he is. He walked great on leash, staying right by his handlers' sides without pulling. He politely accepted treats and a pup cup and thoroughly enjoyed rolling around in the grass. Arthur knows the sit command and learned to get into a car with a boost at first, then by himself. His field trip earned him high marks for excellent leash manners, and he showed just how easy he is to spend time with. Whether it's a walk around the neighborhood, relaxing by your side, or enjoying a sunny afternoon outdoors, Arthur is happiest when he's with his people.

More about Arthur June 24, 2026: Meet ARTHUR, available for rescue or adoption! Arthur is a lovable, gentle giant who is searching for his forever home. He’s a 2 year old, 72lb heart worm positive lab/shepherd mix…sweet, affectionate, good with other dogs and kids, and eager to make new friends. Arthur's favorite thing is being close to his people. He loves leaning against his humans, soaking up affection, and spending quality time with those he loves. Volunteers describe him as a quiet, sweet, loving, gentle giant with a calm and easygoing nature. Arthur is dog friendly and enjoys spending time with other dogs in playgroups. One of his favorite activities is splashing around in the kiddie pool with his canine pals. He was a calming influence for Henrietta, romped a bit with New York, and hung out with his male friends. Arthur is a lower energy guy who will make a great companion. Arthur is ready to trade shelter life for a loving forever home. Located in Hartsville, SC.

Ben Ten - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER

3/17/26 Intake: terrier mix, 58 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Ben Ten was brought in as a stray by a community member from Quarter House Way in Hartsville after taking him in a month ago. They can no longer care for him. He is heartworm negative.

More about Ben Ten July 14, 2026: Ben Ten is a handsome brindle 1 year old, 52 Ib, heart worm negative bully mix with the biggest smile and an even bigger heart. He arrived in March after a kind couple sheltered him through the worst of winter. He’s been waiting for someone to finally choose him since then. Ben Ten is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and loves everyone he meets. Belly rubs are his favorite thing in the world, and he'll gladly soak up every pet and cuddle volunteers have to offer. He plays well with other dogs, has a fun loving personality, and is always ready for an adventure or a cozy snuggle afterward. The family who rescued Ben from the streets shared what an amazing houseguest he was. Although he was a little unsure at first, he quickly settled in, and happily slept in his crate. His finders discovered that Ben has wonderful manners. He rode quietly in the car, walked nicely on a leash, and was an easy companion during outings. They didn't want to surrender him, but because they are elderly and Ben is still a young, energetic pup, they knew he deserved a family who could give him the active life he needs. They told us, "We pray every day that Ben finds a good home."

Sadly, months in the shelter are taking a toll. Ben Ten is growing weary of kennel life, and the constant noise and stress have become overwhelming. Like so many wonderful dogs, kennel stress keeps him from showing visitors the happy, loving dog he truly is. Once he's out of the kennel, his affectionate, goofy personality shines. Ben Ten urgently needs a rescue, adopter,or foster before shelter life changes him forever. He's still just a young dog with so much life, love, and happiness to share. All he needs is someone willing to give him the chance he deserves. If you're looking for a loyal best friend who will happily join you on adventures, then curl up beside you for belly rubs afterward, Ben Ten is waiting for you in Hartsville, SC.

She always has something to say while playing, but it’s all in fun and part of her happy personality. She’s been in the shelter since late April, arriving as a stray and is in need of rescue, adoption, or foster please! The shelter remains full and she shares a kennel with her friend Coker. More about Bilbo Wagz May 24, 2026: BILBO WAGZ, 1 year old, 51lb heart worm positive lab mix is available and ready to leave shelter life behind. This handsome young guy arrived as a stray in January with wounds around his neck, possibly from an old collar, but despite that rough start, Bilbo has remained incredibly friendly and loving. Bilbo has participated in play groups with lots of other dogs and gets along nicely with everyone he meets. Volunteers describe him as handsome, well-mannered, sweet, and easy to spend time with. Billie - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER

1/23/26 Intake: terrier mix, 39.8 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Billie was surrendered by her owners. She is heartworm negative.

More about Billie May 24, 2026: BILLIE, a 1 year young, 39 lb heart worm negative terrier mix needs a home please! Billie was found as a tiny pup on the side of the road and taken in by a family where she lived for 6 months. Unfortunately, things didn't work out, because Billie didn't get along with the family cats, and she was brought to the shelter. Now this young girl is struggling with the stress of kennel life and really needs someone to help her feel safe again. Billie can be unsure at first, especially in the noisy shelter environment, but once she feels comfortable, her playful personality shines through. When she met Napoleon in the play yard, she warmed up to him...and before long the zoomies started! Billie had an absolute blast running and playing with her new friend. Myrtle also befriended Billie and has done well, but she seems inexperienced socially and benefits from slow introductions and a little patience. Billie was house trained, so she should relearn quickly and is a good leash walker. Can you help Billie leave shelter life behind and finally find the forever home she deserves? NO CATS FOR BILLIE! Located in Hartsville, SC.

Blazer

8/14/25 Intake: lab mix, 50 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Blazer was brought in as a stray by animal control from Field Pond Road in Darlington. He is heartworm negative.

Foster Update Sep 23, 2025: Yes, we know—every dog is described as "sweet." But with Blazer, it’s not just true—it’s his entire personality. Blazer came to us as a stray, carrying more than just scars—he had serious wounds on his back that needed urgent care. Through it all, he never stopped wagging his tail. No complaints. No fear. Just grateful brown eyes and a heart that wanted nothing more than to be loved. Even when in pain, Blazer was saying “thank you.” Now fully recovered (with some cool scars that only add to his character), Blazer is ready for his forever family. He’s just over a year old, about 50 pounds, and thinks he’s the perfect size for your lap. (He is not, but don’t tell him.) He’s the definition of eager-to-please. He came to us with some manners already and is doing great on a leash—though squirrels still test his resolve. Blazer is house-trained, crate-trained (he tucks himself in at night!), neutered, heartworm negative, and 100% treat-motivated. His temperament? In a word: chill. This gentle boy lets a 10-pound poodle share his food bowl. He’s thrilled to see our 8-year-old granddaughter but may be a bit too boisterous for toddlers—he’s got a big heart and a bigger body.

What will you get if you adopt Blazer? A soft-eyed, big baby who looks at you like you’re the center of his universe—and who’ll spend his life trying to prove it. Adopt Blazer if you’re ready for a lifetime of love, loyalty, and (yes) over-the-top sweetness.

Chase - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - sponsored for adoption or rescue pull fees

1/6/26 Intake: terrier mix, 54 lbs, 5 yrs old, male, HW+ (treated July 2026), owner surrender. Chase was surrendered by his owners. He is heartworm positive.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Feb 14, 2026: We were happy to take Chase on a fun fieldtrip because he was feeling stressed in his kennel after 12 weeks. He's been at the shelter since owner surrendered in January at 5 years old! He did a pretty good job walking around town and wasn't pulling too much on the leash. He’s overzealous sometimes in meeting new dogs, has a healthy curiosity, and the shelter said he has a more active play style. He really enjoyed going to the park to play. He also watched the Little League playing baseball and was fine with the kids petting him through the fence. We also went to Purrs McBarkin' and he was able to choose his own treat. He really liked the soft chews the best. By the end of our time together, he was tired of walking and returned to the shelter ready for a nap.

More about Chase Mar 17, 2026: CHASE, 5 year old 57lb heart worm positive lab mix is another Darling who needs to get out of the shelter. He was an owner surrender in early January and is starting to show signs of kennel stress. The noisy shelter setting is hard on some dogs, and especially on dogs like Chase who knows what it’s like to have a family. Chase tested well with other dogs, walks well on a leash, and enjoys the kiddie pool! He is always happy to get out into the play yard and be free of the kennel. See his smiling face? He appreciates that the volunteers took him out to play and have some fun. Chase is such a handsome boy, and he NEEDS AN ANGEL TO HELP PLEASE. Ask for him ASAP, so he can find a new home.

Found as a stray at Coker College, he’s been waiting patiently for his forever family. Coker is a social, dog friendly SUPERSTAR, a volunteer favorite, and has earned ROCK STAR status as a trusted tester dog. Coker is sweet, happy, and good natured with everyone he meets. He enjoys the volunteers and does well on a leash. He loves other dogs and would thrive in an active home where he can enjoy adventures, playtime, and plenty of affection.
