When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.
Napoleon - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER - *ROCKSTAR*
12/3/25 Intake: lab mix, 55.4 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, stray. Napoleon was brought in as a stray by animal control from W Billy Farrow HWY in Hartsville. He is heartworm positive.
More about Napoleon Mar 4, 2026: NAPOLEON a 1 year old, 56lb heart worm positive lab mix is one of our RockStar dogs! He is absolutely awesome with every dog he meets in play groups, and he helps the evaluation team learn about other dogs he engages with. Napoleon was out and about with his volunteer handler during the Paws Around the Pee Dee Palentine event and was a good boy. His handler mentioned he’s sweet, curious, and a bit timid, but once they spent some time together he warmed up, enjoying snuggles, and loving belly rubs. He walks pretty good on a leash, enjoys a good squeaky toy and treats too! Napoleon has been waiting since December for a chance at a new home. He’d make a great companion. Napoleon is located in Hartsville SC.
Foster Update Apr 4, 2026: Looking for a great dog to foster or adopt? Meet Napoleon! We took this guy home to give him a short break from shelter life and what a pleasant surprise he was! This is one happy boy! He loves to take a walk and explore his surroundings. Napoleon is crate trained, has zero accidents in the house, doesn’t bark, and loves to play. While a bit shy at first with new people, he warms up quickly. He enjoys being with other dogs! Napoleon is 1.5 years old, neutered, and heartworm positive. That pesky heartworms can be treated!

2/5/26 Intake: terrier/shepherd mix, 47.2 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, owner surrender. Nugget was surrendered by his owners, because they are having health issues and can no longer care for him. He is heartworm positive.
Radio Pet of the Week Apr 9, 2026: Nugget is our adorable Rock 94.7 WWBD Pet of the Week sponsored by our friends at Purrs McBarkin'. Nugget's wagging tail was a blur as he enjoyed his time on the radio telling all listeners how awesome he is. He is indeed the cutest too in his eye-catching soft brindle coat! At around 45lbs, he would fit perfectly by your side for walks, riding shotgun, and snuggles on the couch. A rockstar with other dogs and a fan of all people, this sweet fella is a great choice for a family. Bring along a toy and it's a perfect day for Nugget! Nugget has been with us since February when owner surrendered due to his mom's health. She found him roadside in Sumter, and he had a home with her in Darlington for around a year. She said he was such a good boy, great with dogs, kids, and might find cats too interesting. If you have cats, we can further evaluate. He's 1-2 years young, heartworm positive, and that's treatable and we will help with it too. Nugget hopes you heard his debut this morning and will come meet him! 8 weeks at our shelter is plenty for Nugget to know he's ready to go home again!

Foster Update Jan 13, 2026: Piglet lives up to her name—she snorts like a pig when she gets excited and happily eats anything you give her. She is incredibly lovable and seeks pets from anyone she meets. Piglet is not suited for homes with small children as she gets overly excited and may jump on them. She loves playing with dogs her size, but she does not do well with small breed dogs or cats, which she tends to see as toys. Her favorite things in the world are getting pets and cuddling. She is crate, potty, and leash trained.

She’s completely house-trained and settles in beautifully indoors, making her an easy and stress-free companion. She’s also comfortable in her crate and handles downtime like a pro. This girl has a playful side too—fetch is one of her absolute favorite things, and she’ll happily chase a ball as long as you’re willing to throw it. Pinky gets along great with other dogs, so she’d do well in a home with a furry sibling or as a solo pup soaking up all the attention. Affectionate by nature, Pinky loves being close to her people. Roscoe - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER
12/8/25 Intake: terrier mix, 51.2 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Roscoe was brought in as a stray by animal control from Iseman Rd in Darlington. He is heartworm positive.
Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Feb 14, 2026: ROSCOE aka Mr. Cool is a 2 year old, 52lb heart worm positive terrier mix that is searching for his forever home. He gets along nicely with other dogs, polite and tolerant of higher energy dogs. He is a lower key boy, meandering around the play yard, loving attention from his person, and will happily accept all the butt scratches and pets you can give him. He was great on his Paws Around The Pee Dee Palentines Day adventure, showing off his excellent leash skills and gentle nature. He was great with the kids and riding in the car. He did not jump nor bark. He’s just a calm, loving, laid back boy who would make a lower energy great companion. Roscoe’s fieldtrippers said “We enjoyed that sweet boy. My kids ask about him daily. He will make the perfect pet for someone.” Roscoe is your boy if you enjoy slower walks, to stop and savor life, and then cuddle up on the couch with you. NO CATS FOR ROSCOE. Ask for him now!
Field Trip Apr 7, 2026: A sweet family of volunteers came recently to take Roscoe on another fieldtrip. They heard he's on the urgent list now, waiting here over 100 days and growing stressed in his kennel. They have fieldtripped with him before and know that he's awesome. They hope you will see that too and come take him home. "Roscoe looked quite spiffy after his bath and got to enjoy lunch with the kids at Wild Heart Brewing. It was such a welcomed break from shelter life. He is so charming, laid-back, easygoing, polite, excellent on leash, perfect on car rides, and great with the kids. He deserves a family."
More about Roscoe Apr 9, 2026: We have learned that Roscoe did have a family prior to arriving at our shelter in December as a stray..."His name was Buddy Roo. A little back story on Buddy is..his paw that's a little bigger and different from the other is because he saved his best friend (a miniature chihuahua) from a mean coyote! He is a great protector of smaller ones and loves to cuddle. He is also the best with children I have ever in my life seen. I wish I could have taken him when my mother couldn't anymore." 4 months waiting here is such a waste of Roscoe's awesomeness. He needs kids in his life again, forever. He's good with other dogs, mixing and mingling so nicely with everyone. No cats for Roscoe, please. He's around 2.5 years young, 52lbs, heartworm positive and that can be treated so let's talk about it.

Ruby aka Judy - July 2022 Intake
7/28/22 Intake: lab/plott hound mix, 56 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Previously lived inside with a chihuahua. Reportedly good with kids and other dogs. No cats for her please.
Foster Update Feb 3, 2025: Ruby is an owner surrender who has been with me for a while now. She never stayed at the shelter and came home with me to foster at intake. She was an inside girl with her former family. She doesn't do well with cats, so we have had to keep her outside with us. She is a strong girl who doesn't always realize just how strong she is. I have had her at a few adoption events and she always did well. I would be careful with her around small children as she gets excited and might knock them over. She walks well on the leash and loves to go on walks. She rides well in the car out of the crate. She gets along with others but is more of a people dog rather than needing a canine buddy. She loves her toys and loves nothing more than to play fetch. She will bring it back to me but seems to enjoy showing me just how strong she is by not letting me have the toy. We remedy that by having two toys. She is a good girl, and I would love to find a better situation for her than what I can give her.

Schmitty
2/27/26 Intake: hound mix, 51.6 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW-, stray. Schmitty was brought in as a stray by a community member from Anderson Farm Rd in Darlington. She is heartworm negative.
Foster Update Mar 1, 2026: Schmitty, currently in foster, is available for rescue or adoption. Found as a stray, his Foster Mom tells his story…It’s officially been one week since this handsome boy slid into our DMs — Dog Magnetism. As promised, we took Schmitty for intake with Darlington County Humane Society so he’s officially on the books and on the path to finding his people. In the process, we learned a few important things: he’s a little anxious when the car first starts moving, but settles in once you’re rolling. He weighs about 52 lbs., is estimated to be around 1–2 years old, loves treats, and takes them like a gentleman. Most importantly — he is heartworm NEGATIVE. He greeted every single person he met like they were a long-lost friend, which explains why everyone immediately commented on how handsome he is. He definitely leans “houndy,” but he’s also rocking the cutest little curl at the end of his tail, so we’ll let the breed detectives have fun with that one. We’re still fostering Schmitty and keeping him safe. He was a bit overwhelmed at the shelter with all the noise and smells, and since he’s been doing so well with our pack, there was just no way we could leave him there. We truly can’t believe no one has come forward looking for him. We’ve checked everywhere — lost pet signs, vet offices, multiple microchip scans — and we’ve posted him across every platform and Facebook group from here to Columbia. Nothing. Since a full week has now passed, we’ll be opening the door to adoption and rescue opportunities. Schmitty is officially available through Darlington County Humane Society Rescue and ready for his next chapter. He already knows sit and down, he’s affectionate, friendly, housebroken, and crate trained. Honestly, whoever scoops this boy up is getting a real catch.
