Adults G-M

(1+ Yrs.)

When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

Hot Cocoa

2/5/26 Intake: terrier mix, 42.8 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, surrender. Hot Cocoa was brought in as a stray by the Darlington County Sheriff's Dept. from Hartsville after the owner couldn't take care of her anymore. She came in with Marshamallow. She is heartworm negative.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Feb 14, 2026: My husband and I took Hot Cocoa for a Paws Around the Pee Dee fieldtrip in Hartsville to give her a break from shelter life. She arrived to the shelter in February with her friend Marshmellow (she's in a foster home). They were neglected and someone gave them a voice for help. She arrived to the DCHS with mange, and it's almost gone, and she's looking so pretty. She was also malnourished but is putting a healthy weight on and feeling great. Hot Cocoa is such a cutie-patootie and just loves giving lovins to everyone she meets. We went to Purrs McBarkin' and Dave was amazing as always. She enjoyed all the attention and treats. Then we went to Byerly Park to play, then Kalmia Gardens for a stroll, then to Wild Heart Brewing Company for some yummy food, and then back to Byerly Park to get more zoomies in. Hot Cocoa was great in the car; she needed some help getting in. She was also good on a leash; she does like to pull a little but calmed down when we asked her to. Just meeting her for the first time, she couldn't have been a better companion for the day. If you're looking for a loving family member that likes to zoom around when she's feeling a little active and then be a couch potato, I think you should consider Hot Cocoa. She's a great balance of both at 2 yrs old and 47lbs. According to DCHS, Hot Cocoa is great with other dogs and is heartworm negative. On our outing, she seemed great with the kids she met, and DCHS can test her with kids. She is looking for her forever home, and I hope she gets one soon. She really deserves to live a life full of love. Also, if you want to help the dogs that need homes but can't foster, you really should consider going to the DCHS in order to take a dog out for the day. It helps them socialize and gets them out of the stressful kennel.

11/13/25 Intake: terrier mix, 31.8 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW+, stray. Kenzie was brought in as a stray by a community member from Wesley Chapel Rd in Hartsville. She is heartworm positive.

Foster Update Jan 24, 2026: Kenzie the cuddle queen is living her best life right now! A storm foster for the weekend and after 1 evening, I’ve already learned so much!

  • dog friendly

  • people friendly

  • met some kids and she approves. Wasn’t rough

  • likes to be walked (can use some training on the leash but likes to be on it)

  • met some cats, didn’t mind them. Took correction from 1 kitty very quickly

  • CUDDLER! Wants love and attention from people

  • likes to chase, prance, “hop” when playing

  • rode well in car but didn’t want to jump in on her own quite yet

  • she’ll pass on baths but once in the tub, she stayed still while I washed her

  • quiet. Found her reflection in a mirror at night and gave it a growl but then moved on

  • touch is her love language! She wants her person, the belly rubs, the kisses

  • super gentle taking treats

  • sat on command for food and treats

  • polite eater and drinker - no drippy mess on the floor

  • not quite potty trained but goes on the leash every time I have taken her out

More about Kenzie Apr 12, 2026: Meet Kenzie. “LOVER…SUPER FRIENDLY…FUN.” Kenzie is a sweet 1 year old 34lb heart worm positive cattle dog mix that is great with other dogs, good with dog savvy cats, loves kids and is always ready to shower her person with love. She’s been out and about Hartsville during the Paws Around the Pee Dee adventure and also in a temporary winter storm foster home. Kenzie is a Snuggle Queen and will take advantage of all the snuggles and love she can get. She rides well in the car once she gets a lift in, sits on command, and is a gentle treat taker. Kenzie arrived as a stray wearing a collar, so she must have had a home, but no one came looking for her. She’s smart and while in her temporary foster home learned “go potty” meant sitting by the door to be leashed up to go out. Kenzie hopes to continue her training in her own home, she’s waiting for someone to see just how awesome she is. Located in Hartsville SC, ask for her today!

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Feb 14, 2026: Hey y’all, I’m King and I’m looking for a fun and adventurous home. I was one of the lucky doggies that went out on a Paws Around the Pee Dee Palentine event, and I had the best time! My handler friends said I’m friendly, smart, and energetic. I loved the walk around Kalmia Gardens and could use some further leash training, but I promise I can learn that fast. The entire day was wonderful. I met lots of other folks, kids, and dogs at Wild Heart Brewing, got some yummy treats, and I showed off that I know how to sit. I am sweet and loving, ready to accept hugs and give kisses in return. Please ask for me soon, I’m here waiting, in Hartsville SC.

Kobe - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER

11/11/25 Intake: terrier mix, 51.8 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, owner surrender. Kobe was surrendered by his owners, because they are not able to keep him anymore. He came in with Claire. He is heartworm positive.

More about Kobe Mar 18, 2026: KOBE, 1 year old 48lb heart worm positive terrier mix is looking for a home. Kobe was in trial adoption but played too rough with the cats in the home and was returned. He is longing to be chosen…he’s dog friendly, loves his people, and did really well on his Paws Around the Pee Dee Palentines adventure around Hartsville. His volunteer handlers said Kobe is a “wonderful dog.” Loving, obedient and playful, he knows how to sit, has excellent leash skills, and was calm and laid back during is time out. Kobe rode well in the car, loves to snuggle, and enjoyed treats, especially the pup cup. He preferred walking and sniffing at quiet Kalmia Gardens rather than the noisy, busy downtown streets. Kobe is desperate to get out of the shelter. He does not present well in his kennel as he’s so eager to get out of it, but once he’s out, he is a total dreamboat. Kobe did very well with house breaking and crate training during his trial and is ready to pack his bags. WHO CAN CHANGE KOBE’S LUCK? Some love, a place to run, another doggy friend to play with and dog, and savvy cats would be great for this youngster. This young, handsome boy needs your help now!

Field Trip Apr 25, 2206: Kobe did FANTASTIC on his field trip. He and his field trippers went to the lake. He was friendly with kids, adults, and completely ignored other dogs barking at him. He stopped pulling on the leash shortly after starting the walk. He also did well riding in the car. They enjoyed Kobe for about 5 hours, and boy did he enjoy himself. Kobe is still looking for his furever home.

Lori arrived in November with friend Carl, both found as strays and cared for by a Good Samaritan. Lori is the sweetest dog, she loves to play with doggy friends, great in reading other dogs play styles. She’s affectionate, kissy, and loves to engage with her human friends. Lori did great with kids she met during a birthday party held at the shelter last week. She was gentle when accepting peanut butter from them. She walks well on a leash and was a good girl while in a temporary cold weather foster home this winter. She’s such a happy, fun girl. Ask for her please! Located in Hartsville, SC.

Radio Pet of the Week Apr 15, 2026: Lori is our beautiful Pet of the Week featured on Rock 94.7 WWBD, sponsored by our friends at Purrs McBarkin'! What a rockstar Lori is! She was raised in a home and that clearly shines through. She has great manners and a desire to please her people. She loves water, a nod to the lab in her. She's wonderful with other dogs. While we always enjoy seeing Lori playful with her zoomies, we were reminded today too of her much softer side as she gently took treats, politely sat without direction, and rolled over for lots of belly rubs. She is gentle with children and just as polite in her cuddles. At 2.5 years mature and around 58lbs, she's simply an awesome dog! We are so impressed with Lori and can't believe she has been at our shelter since November. She is heartworm positive and we can help with that so let's get this great gal a family!

Lou Lou

4/7/26 Intake: lab/terrier mix, 56 lbs, 4 yrs old, female, HW-, stray. Lou Lou was brought in as a stray by animal control from Dunn St in Hartsville. She is heartworm negative.

Volunteer Input Apr 19, 2026: Lou Lou is an older girl, and you can see it in the soft, worn way she carries herself. She’s quiet, calm, and so gentle. When I offered her treats, she took them carefully, like she didn’t want to make a mistake. She didn’t jump. She didn’t bark. She just slowly made her way to the front of her kennel, waiting for a little attention. When I got down on her level and told her she was a good girl, she smiled. Lou Lou needs a soft bed and a soft place to land. She’s medium-sized (around 56 lbs), heartworm negative, and asking for so little—just someone who isn’t looking for a puppy or a high-energy adventure buddy. She’s the kind of dog you come home to after a long day. The kind that rests her head beside you and just exists with you.
