When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

11/11/25 Intake: terrier mix, 51.8 lbs, 1 yr old, male, HW+, owner surrender. Kobe was surrendered by his owners, because they are not able to keep him anymore. He came in with Claire. He is heartworm positive.
More about Kobe Mar 18, 2026: KOBE, 1 year old 48lb heart worm positive terrier mix is looking for a home. Kobe was in trial adoption but played too rough with the cats in the home and was returned. He is longing to be chosen…he’s dog friendly, loves his people, and did really well on his Paws Around the Pee Dee Palentines adventure around Hartsville. His volunteer handlers said Kobe is a “wonderful dog.” Loving, obedient and playful, he knows how to sit, has excellent leash skills, and was calm and laid back during is time out. Kobe rode well in the car, loves to snuggle, and enjoyed treats, especially the pup cup. He preferred walking and sniffing at quiet Kalmia Gardens rather than the noisy, busy downtown streets. Kobe is desperate to get out of the shelter. He does not present well in his kennel as he’s so eager to get out of it, but once he’s out, he is a total dreamboat. Kobe did very well with house breaking and crate training during his trial and is ready to pack his bags. WHO CAN CHANGE KOBE’S LUCK? Some love, a place to run, another doggy friend to play with and dog, and savvy cats would be great for this youngster. This young, handsome boy needs your help now!

Foster Update Jan 21, 2026: Lance is a spunky, 1 1/2 year old, Terrier/Shepherd mix. He is neutered, up to date on all of his shots, and ready to apply for a full time job as a canine friend to some lucky family. Lance was found as a stray at a neighbor's home. She asked for help, and we gladly brought him home to foster and work to find a good home for him. He has been to a few playgroups as well as an appearance at a local festival in our community. He did great with everyone he met. He loves having other dogs to play and run with. He tested very well with multiple male and female dogs at the shelter and received rave reviews from our Evaluation Team. He is the epitome of the "life is good" motto and meets each moment with enthusiasm, smiles, and tail wags. He is a young guy and still has a lot of puppy qualities about him. He loves a good treat and would be an easy boy to train. He is working on his leash skills and on jumping into the car. Once in, he rides very well out of a crate. He was very afraid when we first got him and is becoming more comfortable and confident with new experiences. He is a smart, affectionate, and happy boy who hopes that the right family will finally notice his amazing smile and his boyish charm.

*NEW* Foster Update Jan 26, 2026: Maxwell does well staying inside the home and even in a fenced area next door, showing no destructive behavior and no attempts to escape. He finds a lot of comfort in the presence of other dogs and truly blossoms when he has a confident canine companion to follow — a home with another dog is a must for him. He’s been on a few river outings and does great exploring at his own pace. He doesn’t wander far and reliably comes back when called, which says so much about the trust he’s building. When he’s outside and free, he’s still cautious about physical touch, but even there we’ve seen noticeable improvement. Maxwell will thrive in a patient, understanding home that celebrates small wins and allows him to continue progressing at his own speed. With time, consistency, and a dog buddy by his side, this sweet boy has so much potential to shine.
