When more dogs arrive than we can get out in a timely manner, our longest residents become URGENT. Often these are larger breed dogs that we adore but have simply been at the shelter too long with little to no interest from rescues, adopters, or fosters.

11/7/25 Intake: english bulldog/terrier mix, 55.2 lbs, 10 yrs old, female, HW+, stray. Piglet was brought in as a stray by animal control from Villa Porcine Ln in Lamar. She is heartworm positive.
Foster Update Jan 13, 2026: Piglet lives up to her name—she snorts like a pig when she gets excited and happily eats anything you give her. She is incredibly lovable and seeks pets from anyone she meets. Piglet is not suited for homes with small children as she gets overly excited and may jump on them. She loves playing with dogs her size, but she does not do well with small breed dogs or cats, which she tends to see as toys. Her favorite things in the world are getting pets and cuddling. She is crate, potty, and leash trained.

8/19/25 Intake: shepherd mix, 36 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW+, abandoned. Pinky was brought in as a stray by animal control from James Paul Dr in Darlington after being abandoned at a property where the tenants were evicted. She is heartworm positive.
Foster Update Nov 16, 2025: "Pinky is a playful but very sweet and submissive girl. She is smart, crate trained, house trained, and great with other dogs. She loves relaxing on the couch with her favorite toy or laying in the sun. She’s an easy foster and a loving companion who will fit right in with any family." Love, Pinky's foster dad.

1/14/26 Intake: terrier mix, 39.4 lbs, 1 yr old, female, HW+, stray. Queeni was brought in as a stray by a community member from Welling Farm Rd in Darlington after being dropped off in his yard with a note from the owners stating that they can no longer care for her. The note states that Queeni is a loving dog and is good in the home, loves going outside in the yard, enjoys playing with a plastic bone, and will watch tv with you. She is heartworm positive.

Rambo
7/24/25 Intake: terrier mix, 42 lbs (very thin), 4 yrs old, male, HW+, stray. Rambo was brought in as a stray by Hartsville Animal Hospital in Byrdtown after being found on a doctor's property. He is heartworm positive.

Pet of the Week Feb 4, 2026: From “much too thin” to “woah, look at him.” Rambo arrived at our shelter underweight, malnourished, and heartworm positive. Thanks to the care he received and the generosity of our supporters, he has completely transformed into a happy, healthy, and incredibly handsome boy who is ready for a loving home. Rambo has successfully completed foster home training and would be an easy transition into any household routine. From morning wake-ups, to crate time while you’re at work, to evening couch cuddles, Rambo has it all figured out. He is well-mannered, trained, eager to learn more, and happiest when he is close to his person. He has proven himself everywhere he goes, from trips around town and outdoor events to a Christmas party and even television appearances. Rex - URGENT DUE TO TIME AT SHELTER
7/23/25 Intake: terrier mix, 55 lbs, 2 yrs old, male, HW-, stray. Rex was brought in as a stray by Darlington Police Dept. from City Pool in Darlington. He is Heartworm negative.
More about Rex Feb 10, 2026: Rex is a 2–3 year old, 50 lb heart worm negative terrier mix who has been patiently waiting for his forever family since July. This good looking guy walks beautifully on a leash, adores attention, and happily soaks up hugs, kisses, and love from his people. Rex does great with other dogs, meeting them politely before jumping into play mode and having a blast. He’s especially enjoyed playing ball with our teen volunteers so much so that they asked to take him out again the very next week! He also enjoys children and would make a wonderful, affectionate companion. Shelter friends describe Rex as so handsome, and they’re right. Ruby aka Judy - July 2022 Intake
7/28/22 Intake: terrier mix, 56 lbs, 2 yrs old, female, HW-, owner surrender. Previously lived inside with a chihuahua. Reportedly good with kids and other dogs. No cats for her please.
Foster Update Feb 3, 2025: Ruby is an owner surrender who has been with me for a while now. She never stayed at the shelter and came home with me to foster at intake. She was an inside girl with her former family. She doesn't do well with cats, so we have had to keep her outside with us. She is a strong girl who doesn't always realize just how strong she is. I have had her at a few adoption events and she always did well. I would be careful with her around small children as she gets excited and might knock them over. She walks well on the leash and loves to go on walks. She rides well in the car out of the crate. She gets along with others but is more of a people dog rather than needing a canine buddy. She loves her toys and loves nothing more than to play fetch. She will bring it back to me but seems to enjoy showing me just how strong she is by not letting me have the toy. We remedy that by having two toys. She is a good girl, and I would love to find a better situation for her than what I can give her.

Paws Around the Pee Dee Event Feb 14, 2026: Hey y’all I’m SKULLY, a 2-3 year old, 45lb, heart worm negative terrier mix looking for my forever home. I like to play with other dogs, enjoy hanging out with kids, am a good car traveller, and I walk pretty good on a leash. I got to go out and about Hartsville during the Paws Around the Pee Dee Palentine event and ejoyed every minute of my adventure! *NEW* Foster Update Jan 20, 2026: “Because I’m Happy,” that’s me, Wells! Foster Mom says he’s the happiest dog in Darlington County. Wells is a 2 1/2 year old, 57lb heart worm negative lab terrier mix, a dazzling, handsome brindle boy. Mr. Fun is super happy and his tail is always wagging. Wells is house trained, crate trained, walks great on a leash, enjoys squeaky toys and chew bones, is dog friendly, and adores human attention and belly rubs. Wells is a velcro dog; he will keep you company in the kitchen while you do dishes and then when it’s TV time, he’s right next to you for a good snuggle.
